Many people ask “What conditions does a chiropractor treat?”
The answer the comes as a complete surprise: we don’t treat any specific conditions! Most people often think of lower back pain, headaches, bulging/slipped disc, sciatica, numbness, tingling and burning sensation as chiropractic conditions. While Legacy Chiropractic does have tremendous success in relieving people of these health complaints, but the truth is, they are only the symptoms, not the problem.
In a world where symptom management is the norm, chiropractors are trained to look deeper than the symptoms and correct the cause. If the smoke alarm goes off in your house, it does no good to take out the battery and go back to bed. You would want the fire put out. A chiropractor is trained to study the spine for misalignments, called subluxations. If a subluxation is present, it will disrupt the vital communication in your nervous system and lead to dysfunction including the symptoms listed above. Not everyone with a subluxation experiences the symptoms listed above, however. Some of the other symptoms that can be connected to subluxations are: digestive complaints, allergies, hormone imbalances, ear infections, high blood pressure, TMJ, tinnitus, and vertigo, to name a few. Interestingly, the first chiropractic adjustment recorded restored the hearing of a deaf janitor named Harvey Lillard in 1895.
What is a subluxation?
You are probably familiar with the word dislocation. Although subluxation sounds similar, it is not the same as a dislocation. A subluxation is a misalignment of a spinal bone which creates a disturbance to the function of the nervous system. The result can be some of the symptoms listed above which many people seek chiropractic for.
“What causes subluxations?”
The obvious causes of subluxations are falls, sports injuries, and motor vehicle accidents. But more commonly, we see subluxations caused by the every day micro traumas from our toxic and deficient lifestyles. We sit too much, don’t exercise, eat too much of the wrong foods, not enough of the good foods, and our stress level is at an all-time high. The most commonly overlooked cause is the birth process itself. These all create subluxations over time, and left uncorrected or undetected, they can result in many of the classic symptoms listed above.
This is why we urge everyone from the baby to grandma and grandpa who has never had a chiropractic spinal screening to have their spine and nervous system checked by a chiropractor. You wouldn’t wait for your teeth to fall out to check for cavities, so why wait to see a chiropractor?
